The content world blew up when studios and programmers of all sizes built and launched direct-to-consumer (DTC) streaming services that clawed back a sizable portion of their best content and in turn further diluted what was already a high priced and bloated pay-TV bundle.

While that scenario put even more pressure on the traditional pay-TV market, the resulting multitude of streaming apps also fragmented the market, making it increasingly difficult for consumers to manage their expanding subscriptions. Meanwhile, all of these DTC services were forced to pay more to acquire their subscribers, but eventually tempered acquisition spending as profitability became the top priority.

Now, the tide is turning for programmers and distributors alike as they gravitate toward bundling – or a grand rebundling.

That trend is apparent across all groups. Major programmers such as Disney continue to offer discounted bundles of their own apps and create new bundles with third-party content partners. Meanwhile, cable operators and other video distributors are embracing the role of the super-aggregator by combining their pay-TV services with DTC streaming services.
