Buddha Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, lived and taught in ancient India and Nepal in the 6th–5th century BCE. After his awakening, he revealed a path by which all beings could overcome suffering and realize the true nature of reality.

Many Tibetans recite this mantra daily — while turning their malas (trengwa), circumambulating sacred sites, or performing prostrations. It is a mantra of wisdom, clarity, and liberation.

The mantra is a play on the Buddha’s name:

Muni means sage.
Maha means great.

It can be understood simply as:

“Om wise one, wise one, greatly wise one, hail!”

Yet, as taught by Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the meaning extends much deeper:

OM — the enlightened body, speech, and mind
MUNI — control over suffering and ego
MUNI — freedom from samsara and self-cherishing
MAHA MUNIYE — great mastery over dualistic illusion
SOHA — may these blessings take root in my mind

This 30-minute chanting session is offered slowly and gently, allowing the mantra to resonate deeply — calming anxiety, clarifying the mind, and supporting meditation.
