🌙 What Breaks Your Fast? | Complete Ramadan Guide
Ramadan is one of the most sacred and spiritually uplifting months in Islam. It is a time of fasting, reflection, prayer, discipline, gratitude, and deep connection with Allah (SWT). Every Muslim who fasts during Ramadan wants to ensure that their fast is valid and accepted. However, many people are confused about what actually breaks the fast and what does not.
In this complete Ramadan guide, we will explain in detail what breaks your fast, what does not break your fast, common mistakes people make, and important rulings based on authentic Islamic teachings from the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Whether you are a beginner, a revert, a teenager fasting for the first time, or someone who simply wants to refresh their knowledge — this video will guide you step by step.
🌙 What Is Fasting (Sawm)?
Fasting in Ramadan means abstaining from food, drink, and marital relations from Fajr (dawn) until Maghrib (sunset) with the intention of worship.
Allah says in the Qur’an (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183):
“O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it was prescribed upon those before you that you may become righteous.”
Fasting is not just about hunger and thirst. It is about controlling your desires, your tongue, your anger, your thoughts, and your actions.
🚫 What Breaks Your Fast?
Let’s discuss clearly the actions that invalidate (break) your fast.
1️⃣ Eating and Drinking Intentionally
If a person eats or drinks deliberately during fasting hours, their fast is broken.
This includes:
Water
Juice
Coffee
Tea
Snacks
Candy
Medicine syrup
However, if someone forgets they are fasting and eats or drinks accidentally, their fast is still valid.
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“If someone forgets while fasting and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast, for it is Allah who fed him and gave him drink.”
2️⃣ Intentional Vomiting
If a person forces themselves to vomit, their fast breaks.
But if vomiting happens naturally (due to sickness, nausea, etc.), the fast remains valid.
3️⃣ Marital Relations During Fasting Hours
Sexual intercourse during fasting hours completely invalidates the fast and requires serious expiation (kaffarah).
The expiation includes:
Freeing a slave (historically)
Fasting 60 consecutive days
Feeding 60 poor people (if unable to fast)
This shows how serious this matter is.
4️⃣ Menstruation and Postpartum Bleeding
If a woman begins her menstrual cycle (haidh) or postpartum bleeding (nifas), her fast automatically breaks.
Even if it happens minutes before Maghrib, the fast is invalid for that day and must be made up later.
5️⃣ Intentional Release of Semen
If semen is released intentionally due to stimulation, the fast breaks.
However, involuntary wet dreams do not break the fast because they are not intentional.
6️⃣ Injections and IV Drips (Nutritional)
Scholars explain that nutritional injections (like glucose drips that provide energy) break the fast because they substitute food and drink:
