Purpose of UIM Session
The session focused on explaining the three main purposes of UIM and providing foundational knowledge of telecom services that UIM manages and interacts with.
1. Purpose of UIM
UIM is used for:
• Service Assurance – Generating reports and providing data to NETPOOL and OAS through SOAP/REST APIs.
• Network Fulfillment – Creating engineering work orders that trigger Resolve Automation to update network elements via NMS APIs (Huawei U2000, Nokia NSP, NC, etc.).
• Service Fulfillment – Provisioning end-customer telecom services like broadband, mobile, VPN, DTH, VoIP, etc.
2. Telecom Services Explained
To help the team understand UIM workflows, various telecom services were discussed:
• Mobile services: Voice, SMS, Data
• Home broadband: Fibre/copper
• Enterprise broadband (DIA): Dedicated leased-line Internet
• VPN & Mobile VPN: Secure private networks (e.g., swipe machines in petrol pumps)
• Satellite services: Voice/data where mobile networks don’t exist
• VoIP vs PSTN: Voice over data vs landline telephony
• Cloud & managed services
• ISDN/SIP Trunk: Business voice services (historical & modern)
3. Key Distinctions
• Residential broadband = Best-effort, shared speed
• Enterprise broadband (DIA) = Guaranteed bandwidth, high reliability
• Leased lines support L2/L3 VPN and mission-critical services (ATMs, banks, exam centers).
4. Outcome
The team gained clarity on UIM’s functional roles and how different telecom services relate to UIM’s data, provisioning, and assurance processes. Further sessions will cover IP addressing (IPv4/IPv6) and SIM parameters.
