Verifying tailstock alignment on this 13" lathe. Alignment was done over a year ago, it's still perfect. A tightened tailstock spindle is necessary for proper alignment as well as to start to drill a hole. The loosening of the spindle indicated a 0.001" error. Once the centre-drill located the hole the spindle can be loosened. Recommended procedure. In this case the MT5 to MT3 adaptor needed. In case of a 10" Atlas lathe MT3 taper dead center is good for the spindle and for the tailstock.
