I pulled apart the cold start assist mechanism in this video, to break down how it works. In short, it acts as a time based relay that uses fuel pressure to advance the cam plate in the pump, which means your fuel timing is advanced. It appears to be a significant advance in timing, I would guess 6-12 degrees of fuel advance.
