Welcome to the Fall 2025 Kent Seminar Series. This week's speaker, Yanfeng Ouyang of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, discusses an integrated platform for intermodal freight efficiency, electrification and resiliency.

The Spring 2025 semester is set to feature 13 presentations, each addressing a topic related to electrification in mobility.

Presentation Title: An integrated platform for intermodal freight efficiency, electrification and resiliency

Abstract: This talk presents recent efforts to integrate data and computational models into a platform for the nation’s intermodal freight systems. The research develops logistics optimization models to explain freight shippers’ choices — such as mode and origin/destination — and logistics service providers’ decisions, including routing and scheduling, under both normal and disrupted conditions. These models also serve as building blocks for energy infrastructure investment and renewal policies aimed at improving the efficiency, sustainability and resiliency of the nation’s freight supply chains.

Bio: Ouyang is the George Krambles Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and associate director for mobility at the Illinois Center for Transportation. His research focuses on the planning, operations and control of complex transportation and logistics systems. He earned a doctorate in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2005.
