A total of 12 youths were charged for being involved in a brutal attack, which took place on a Saturday in October 2010, during business hours when the commercial area was crowded.

Of the 12, five were charged more seriously for the roles they played in the fight which killed 20-year-old student Darren Ng.

Stilwell Ong Keat Pin, 20; Ho Wui Ming, 22; Chen Wei Zhen, 21; Edward Tay Wei Loong, 20 and Louis Tong Qing Yao, 17, faced charges of culpable homicide.

Ong, who was 18 when the crime was committed, had slashed the victim with a chopper and started the fight that evening.

The prosecution had pressed for 15 years in jail and 12 strokes of the cane for Ong, but he was eventually given a 12-year-sentence and 12 strokes of the cane.

Ho Wui Ming was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison and given 10 stokes of the cane for stabbing the victim with a screwdriver. He also pleaded guilty to two charges of theft and mischief.

Chen Wei Zhen and Edward Tay were both sentenced to 10 years in jail and 10 strokes for attacking Darren Ng with a fruit knife and chopper respectively.

Louis Tong was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment and 11 strokes of the cane for stabbing Ng with a fruit knife. He also faced charges related to loanshark harassment.

Justice Tay Yong Kwang said during sentencing that it was as heartbreaking for the court as it must have been for the parents watching the proceedings, The Straits Times reported.

He said: "I can only implore especially on behalf of all parents, young persons in secret societies and street gangs to open their eyes to the tragic truth that violence begets violence and vicious acts only breed more vicious reactions."

All five of the young men were represented by lawyer Mr Subhas Anandan, who argued that they should be given the chance of rehabilitation.

Another six youths have been sentenced to caning and jail terms between four years and six years and three months.

The last accomplice will be sentenced on Sep 24.
