Brushless Motor Used as An Alternator, description and test with surprising results!

I had heard that RC brushless motors could be used as alternators or AC generators, but i could never really find enough info on how good or efficient they were. My online electronics store had some really small ones on special offer so i took the plunge and bought one. I wasnt expecting much from this motor but it might give me an idea what i could get from a bigger one if it was any good.

Basically a brushless motor is a 3 phase motor that can run on either an AC sinewave, or pulsed DC with each of the waveforms 120 degrees apart, the motor effectively follows the magnetic field around.

I wanted about 10 amps when rectified to charge a sealed lead acid battery in a large UAV and also to power some of the more hungry electronic equipment on board. A fat chance from a thing this small!!

SO bearing in mind these little motors run at speeds approaching 50,000 rpm, i found the nearest thing i could to power it...my Dremil!

I fitted the motor to the end of the dremil and hunted around for a suitable load, such as a small car headlight bulb, the only one i could find was a 55 watt 12 volt spotlight bulb, i couldnt expect more then a glow from this set up could I??...or could I?
