As much as we'd like to think that the profits in our small business can fund the growth into a bigger business, the reality is that most fast-growing businesses need to source funds from outside of their founders' pockets.

In Silicon Valley it seems to be from the world of Venture Capital and so-called Angel Investors. But for the rest of us it seems to be in the form of a bank loan or the Bank of Mum & Dad.

But there is another form of investment raising that is gentler and less of an intrusion into the running of your business than Venture Capital.

Crowdfunding, mostly known for Kickstarter and IndieGoGo isn't just for funky gadgets and craft beer start-ups. It's not a licensed and regulated form of investment in start-up companies in Australia.

Companies like Black Hops Brewing, Shebah Ridesharing, DC Power Company and LITT Global and Qpay have all raised the capital they needed for expansion through crowdfunding platforms in Australia.
