🌿Ready to grow your own litchi tree at home? In this step-by-step video, we'll guide you through the fascinating process of propagating litchi tree by air layering using a surprising yet effective material.
Step 1: Select the Right Branch
First, choose a healthy and vigorous litchi branch that is about 1/2 inch in diameter and 1-2 years old. Using a sharp knife, make a ring-shaped cut around the branch, approximately 1 to 2 inches long, and remove the bark to expose the cambium layer beneath. Gently scrape away the green tissue beneath the bark.
Step 2: Apply Rooting Agent
Next, take a piece of raw turmeric and apply it to the exposed cambium layer. Turmeric helps protect the branch from fungal infections, keeps it hydrated, and acts as a natural rooting hormone, encouraging root growth. If you don’t have raw turmeric, you can use turmeric powder or aloe vera gel.
Step 3: Create the Rooting Chamber
Take a 250 ml plastic glass, make a hole at the bottom to fit the branch, and cut one side of the glass to wrap it around the branch. Secure the plastic cup with electrical tape.
Step 4: Fill with Cocopeat
Soak some cocopeat in water until fully saturated and fill the plastic glass with it. Cocopeat is ideal for air layering because it retains moisture, provides good aeration, and contains essential nutrients to encourage root development. If cocopeat is unavailable, you can use garden soil or compost.
Step 5: Wrap with Black Polythene
Now, cover the glass with black polythene or aluminum foil to block light, promoting root growth, and tie it with a zip tie to secure it. This will maintain humidity and help the roots form.
Step 6: Timing and Root Development
The best time to propagate a litchi plant is during the spring or summer, as the warm and humid weather promotes root growth. After about 50 days, carefully remove the plastic cover to check the root development. Be gentle, as the new roots are soft and delicate.
Step 7: Transplant the New Plant
Once the roots are well-developed, cut the branch from the mother plant. Prepare a pot with well-draining soil and plant your new litchi tree, ensuring the roots are fully covered. Water the plant thoroughly and place it in a bright spot with indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sun exposure to prevent stress on the young plant.
