Saturday Morning Hand Built Kiln - Fooling around in the clay

Fire, Ovens, Kilns, Braai's... we love all of it. Alexia and I wanted to learn about kilns. Particularly, the cross draft kiln - so we built one with what we had. This video has captions with more information.

We did not follow the exact ratios of intakes, chimneys and chokes, but we got a fairly good draft going. The packed stones evidently leak a lot, causing vacuum ingress of oxygen, but Alexia eased this by using clay to seal the sides.

On the first burn, some stones burst (internal moisture). The second burning went better after everything dried properly.

I started the fires using a ferro rod with Tef tinder.

There will be more pyro projects in the future. We need a bread oven, new braai(bbq) and definitely have some pottery plans.
