"it's just a neon how fast can it be" - famous last words from someone who is about to get disrespectfully gapped by the first car that dodge's SRT ever made. We're of course talking about the Neon SRT-4 today.

SRT's engineers took an unsuspecting cheap family car - the neon, and under the hood stuffed a 2.4 liter turbocharged 4 cyl making 230 horsepower and 250 ft lbs of torque, backed up by a 5 speed manual. This combo was good for 0-60 in right on about 5 seconds. The srt4 also had upgraded suspension, brakes, but kept the roll down windows of the regular neon, to keep you humble. This whole package set you back about 20 grand in 2003 money. Not a bad deal for something that could smoke v8 muscle cars of the same era.

The SRT4 is pretty darn bulletproof but the transmission's third gear does like to leave the chat from time to time, depending on how hard the previous owner slammed it in gear, and how often. You've got issues with boost leaks, as you would with any 20 year old car, and the biggest issue of all I guess is - you have to drive a neon. With all of that aside though, it's a pretty solid package.

When it comes to mods, the SRT-4 shines. Heck it shines so much the factory gave it Mopar tuning stages, being one of the first cars to do so. For 400 bucks Mopar would sell you a stage 1 kit, injectors and a tune, good for 240 horsepower and 260 ft lbs. Stage 2 maxes out the stock td04 with bigger injectors, and a more aggressive tune, 260 horsepower and 280 ft lbs this time. Finally mopar would just sell you a bigger turbo, in their stage 3 kit. 300 horsepower, 320 ft lbs of torque. They also offered a ton of other parts at the time, blowoff valves, powdercoated valve covers, a cat back, mopar what happened, you used to be cool. Factory stages not enough for you? You know the drill. Intake, downpipe, intercooler, bigger turbo. Sky is the limit here, but the stock bottom end is only good for about 500 so pace yourself accordingly.
