Steelpan and Powder Parade 2025. Port of Spain Trinidad

Steel Pan: The steel pan, also known as the steel drum, originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the early 20th century. Developed by African descendants in response to colonial bans on traditional drumming, it evolved from tamboo bamboo (bamboo percussion instruments) to metal containers like oil drums. Innovators like Ellie Mannette played pivotal roles in refining the instrument, turning it into the melodic, tuned percussion instrument we know today. The steel pan is celebrated globally and holds the distinction of being the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century.

Powder Parade: The Powder Parade is closely associated with J'ouvert, the pre-dawn festival marking the start of Carnival. Rooted in emancipation celebrations after the abolition of slavery in 1834, it features revelers covered in paint, mud, and powder. The use of powder symbolizes freedom, rebellion, and joyous expression, reflecting the liberation from colonial oppression.

Together, both the steel pan and Powder Parade highlight Trinidad and Tobago's resilience, creativity, and cultural pride.
