Russia - Baltic Sea Fleet Turns To Rust

Russia's once proud Baltic Sea Fleet seems doomed to rust in
harbours in the Baltic state of Kaliningrad. Hundreds of naval
ships from the Russian Baltic Sea Fleet are listing in what have
become ship graveyards, because there is insufficient money or
personnel to use or dismantle the fleet. Before the break-up of
the Soviet Union, the Baltic Sea Fleet was spread over Latvia,
Lithuania, Estonia and Russian Republic. The bay at Kaliningrad
housed roughly 50 ships owned by the Russian Republic. Since 1993,
Russia has taken all its Baltic Sea Fleet ships back from the
newly independant Baltic states and has now over 300 ships. Russia
does not have the finances for maintenance, nor the space. The
Baltic Sea Fleet has put its money into only a few modern ships
and junked the rest. There isn't even enough money to reuse parts
and metal. Oil spills from the fleet slick the waters of the
harbour with no plans for their cleanup. Several local artists
decided to highlight the problem by turning rusty ships into art
works.
