↓↓Hideki Aoyama's Impression about FP9↓↓

●Now that you've tried both the Double Chain Drive(FP9C) and the Direct Drive(FP9D), what's your impression of them?

Aoyama: I've always been using the Belt Drive Pedal, FP720, and hardly used other pedals, so I'll compare them and give you my thoughts. The Chain Drive is kind of straight forward, I mean, I was surprisingly able to play it very naturally. As for The Direct Drive, I have tried the previous model, FP8500D, before. But as I had been using the FP720, I thought "it comes back up too quick," to be honest. The FP9, however, has a lot of function to tune player’s preferred performance. so I tried to adjust them to match the playing feel with the FP720 as close as possible and that way I was able to play it as well. They are both good but I personally prefer the chain.

●During the shoot, you said your foot position changed between the chain and the direct drive.

Aoyama: Yeah, it did. It also changes on the FP720. Since the FP720 has "pliability," I put my foot on the left side of the back end of the pedal. But when I play with the chain drive, my foot position is around the center, and for faster phrases, it goes back down a little bit. You'll see that when you watch the video. Because of its solid structure, the points I was going for changed naturally, I guess.

●What do you think of its sound?
Aoyama: The beater is felt but since it's fairly hard, it gives a punchy sound. But I think it can also go with gentle music. It's surprising how you can do anything with this one pedal.

●Yamaha say they made it their flagship model because it could perform all the nuances of all the pedals in Yamaha's lineup.

Aoyama: I see. I can certainly feel that they took all the good points from the pedals they've ever made and put them into this one. On top of that, every part of the pedal is solid, unbreakable and reliable. It's really good. FP9 has very light playing feel, makes no noise and seems solid and unbreakable.

●How did you feel about the double bass pedals?
Aoyama: First and foremost, it's about the slave side. I usually use the FP720 double bass pedal (DFP-750) for my slave side as well but the difference with the right pedal had always been my concern. DFP9 has got the improved joint and you can get almost the same light playing feel as your right pedal. I was so impressed. I feel that I would be able to play fast phrases with a different feeling than before with these pedals.

●Lastly, would you give a message to drummers who are considering to get FP9?
Aoyama: Both the direct and the chain drive are great in its own way so try it first at a store as much as possible. It embraces the history of Yamaha's Foot pedals and allows you whatever you want to play, so just try it first. It's a great pedal. Let's play with it together!
