The Americans by Robert Frank

Book of the Week 14: The Americans by Robert Frank.

One of the most influential photo books of all time, according to just about everyone. I found myself needing some time to appreciate this work. As in some other books we have looked at, the one photograph per spread layout allows us to focus on one photograph at a time while making us work for the connections between it and previous photographs. The minimal text is only a short caption for each photograph. Published in 1958, it is easy to see this work as a forerunner of so much which came after it. I'm not sure I would describe it as a "sad poem" but then who am I to disagree with Jack Kerouac?
