“Agnus dei” from Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit pour Noël (Midnight Mass for Christmas) from ca.1694, sung by Quire Cleveland under Ross W. Duffin at Mary, Queen of Peace Church in Cleveland, OH, on Dec. 20, 2014. The tune is taken from an early French noël also on this channel: “À minuit fut fait un réveil.” Charpentier’s original plan called for the instrumental opening to serve as the first “Agnus,” the choral section to serve as the second, and an instrumental tag to serve as the third and final “Agnus.” We have expanded the form to allow performance of the three traditional iterations of the text, with “Dona nobis pacem” at the end.
