Kris explains the process for obtaining a VPAT and achieving WCAG 2.1 AA conformance, breaking down a common question from the client mailbag. The process is simple and straightforward, consisting of three distinct phases: the audit, technical support (which is optional), and ACR issuance.

The audit phase involves a formal evaluation of a digital asset. This means a meticulous and thorough assessment against the relevant technical standard—in this case, WCAG 2.1 AA. All accessibility issues are identified and compiled into a comprehensive report. The report includes the location of each issue, the associated WCAG success criterion, the recommended fix, and a screenshot or screen recording. This level of detail helps clients understand exactly what issues exist and how to address them.

Once the audit is complete, an ACR can be issued immediately. The ACR is simply the filled-in and completed VPAT—the VPAT itself is just a template. However, most clients prefer a cleaner ACR, which is where the technical support phase comes in.

During technical support, hours are used to validate fixes made by the client's team. After the team works through the audit report and resolves the identified issues, validation ensures those issues have actually been fixed. Most clients fall between two and seven hours of technical support, depending on the state of accessibility and the scope of the digital asset. This process results in a cleaner ACR.

Once full conformance is reached or the client is satisfied, the ACR is issued. This means filling in the VPAT completely and issuing it as an independent accessibility company rather than a self-issued document from an internal team.

Some clients opt to receive an ACR both after the initial audit and after remediation. This is often because they face a deadline requiring documentation regardless of accessibility status. They can meet that deadline initially, then produce a cleaner ACR later when procurement questions arise, positioning themselves better in the process.
