This is a story of not flying head-on into another airplane.

I recently installed a uAvionix echoUAT ADS-B Transceiver in my Searey flying boat amphibian. It passed all of the FAA flight checks. This video is of my first practical experience with it detecting oncoming traffic and displaying it on my iFly 740 GPS in both 2D over an aircraft sectional chart and simultaneously in 3D synthetic vision.

The echoUAT picks up transmissions from my Mode C transponder (which include my altitude), mixes in my airplane's registration number, GPS position and groundspeed, and maybe some other data. Then the echoUAT transmits the whole thing to the ADS-B system. And it also transmits the data by Wi-Fi to my airplane's GPS and to any other nearby devices with Wi-Fi--my iPhone, or an iPad, or an Android device if I had one.

In other words, the iFly hardware version (the iFly 740) installed in the instrument panel and iFly on my iPhone both can display any traffic reported by ADS-B in two ways: (1) overlaid on a moving-map aviation chart and also (2) in a synthetic 3D display, both at the same time.

The map view shows the location of the traffic in respect to my own airplane. And the 3D synthetic view shows it vertically as well.

You can see glimpses of the iFly display on my iPhone, mounted at the left side of the cockpit, with iFly zoomed in to show a satellite photo of the airport. Alas, that's only for the first 17 seconds. After that I switched to the phone's camera--and then sort of forgot about it as things started to get interesting.

What is ADS-B? Automatic dependent surveillance – broadcast. It's a relatively new system for locating and tracking aircraft in flight. In the USA it became mandatory on 2020-01-01 for all aircraft flying in airspace that previously needed a Mode C transponder. Find out more:
