What makes this song feel the most empty is the use of chords without the 3rd. In music theory, you need at least the root and the third to identify the quality of the chord. With this song however, under the context of the phrase, the chords without the thirds lean towards sounding minor. Sometimes, when leaving out the third, the chord can sound more open and ambiguous. However, in this case, it creates a sad and empty sound. I believe the composer did this on person, to emulate Kikyo's empty soulless body in the music.

I used tremolos to replicate the vibrato on the erhu in the original soundtrack. In the second repeat of the theme, a distant horn can be heard responding to the theme played by the erhu. I believe the composer wanted this horn to represent Inuyasha calling out to Kikyo from a distance.
