Continuing my Electric Bike Project,

I live about 15 miles from the nearest town,
where the post office, gas station, and civilized people live.

In April I sold my truck, leaving a broken motorcycle,
and a couple of bicycles.

What you're about to see is my attempt at building an
off grid DIY Survival
quadracycle, a pedal powered micro car, with solar electric assist.

With this, I am planning to not have to buy gas, have insurance,
or licence stuff.

I'm using a mix of bicycle parts, scrap metal,
and random wheels and stuff I have on hand.

In this episode, I try to figure out how to make steering linkage.
Earlier episodes were kind of an overview, so I'm trying to
include more details of each system for this and some
of the next videos.

The front wheels in this episode are 20 inch "BMX" style bike wheels,
but they are actually utility cart wheels, they come with bearings,
and are set up to use with a 1/2 inch axle or bolt.

At this point, none of the parts are probably what will be on
the final bike project, I'm just getting an idea of what will
work, and which direction to go from here.

I could have just used an electric bike conversion kit,
that would have been simpler. But I want something more than
just another electric bike. I'll want to haul cargo, groceries,
and maybe parts. I need long distances, like 50 or 100 miles
in a day. And I need to do that over very rough roads.
I've seen some quad trikes on the market, with motors,
that start at $2000 to $5000 and up to $10,000.
I sold my truck for $2000! And I'm having fun making stuff.

I had some notions of what I wanted,
but no real idea how I was going to make it work.

The design I will be using is a recumbent bike,
so instead of sitting up on top like a regular bike,
you are laying back, with your feet out in front of you.
That gives you the advantage of much less wind resistance,
and also your weight is on your back,
not on your wrists, which sounds really nice on a bumpy road!

I'm looking at 4 wheels, for the reason of hauling cargo.
There are a few quads on the market,
and the area between the rear wheels
is very well suited to putting boxes or storage totes, etc.
And I could also pull a small trailer.

Solar panels up above would make for a really nice shade roof
which sounds like a great idea in the desert!
