People in Scotland are being urged to stay indoors as Storm Floris batters the country with “unseasonably” strong winds.

Areas north of the border will be hit by heavy rain and winds of up to 85mph, the Met Office warned as it upgraded weather warnings to amber.

The Met Office said the storm could bring injuries and danger to life, with large waves expected to hit seafronts, coastal roads and properties.

Trains and ferry services have already been cancelled, and air and road transport will also be affected.

On Sunday night the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo cancelled its Monday show — the first time it has called off the event because of a weather-related incident in its 76-year history.

Angela Constance MSP, the cabinet justice secretary, urged people not to travel if possible.

The warning for “unseasonably” strong winds came into force at 10am on Monday and will last for 12 hours across most of the central belt and north of Scotland. A yellow warning for other parts of Scotland has been in place since 6am on Monday and will continue until midnight.
