Could Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) help people with autoimmune disorders?

The short answer is probably.

Autoimmune disease treatment with HBOT would be considered an off label treatment. It’s not a direct treatment for autoimmunity.

BUT…often we do find that it helps patients who have autoimmune issues.

When we look at using HBOT off label, we always go back to “Mechanisms of Action” and use our clinical judgement.

We ask ourselves how this therapy works and what it does in the body, and then compare it to the pathophysiology of this patient’s condition.

When we do that and assess autoimmunity as a whole, we find that there are certain cytokines or inflammatory markers that are consistently and chronically elevated in the overwhelming majority of these patients.

We also know that one of the mechanisms of action of hyperbaric is to reduce inflammation.

We would also see that there's cell and tissue damage in a lot of these cases as a result of the chronic inflammation and the immune system attacking those cells over time.

We know that one of the mechanisms of action of hyperbaric is cellular repair and cellular regeneration.

There are a variety of different growth factors and repair factors that are released inside of our body as a result of repetitive exposures to HBOT.

Therefore, from a cell and tissue repair standpoint, HBOT would also be reasonable to use in many of those cases.

Lastly, there is an imbalance inside of the immune system. There is an overactive portion of the immune system.

In some cases, while there's an overactive portion of the immune system, there may be other areas of the immune system have been chronically suppressed (often due to other treatments the patient has tried).

One of the other mechanisms of action of hyperbaric is balancing and regulation of the immune system. So, HBOT could also be used to help create that balance inside of our immune system.

When you break it down this way, generally speaking, as long as a patient isn’t contraindicated, HBOT can often help people suffering with an autoimmune condition.
