Some rare and colour amatuer footage of mines in Zimbabwe in 1952. This includes coverage of the workings and living areas of the (then) Shabanie Mine (also spelt Shabani, and now known as Zvishavane today), the various Gath's mines, and Maglas village. This concludes with some sort of special event or celebration involving dances and feats of endurance. A great contemporary ethnography of that time and place (though granted no doubt selective as with all film).


These mines were mainly developed to obtain asbestos. This mineral was found to be highly toxic, and many of these mines struggled after this. Though other minerals/precious metals have replaced asbestos since then. It is great to see what this region of central Zimbabwe (Midlands Province) looked like, and what people did some 70 years ago!
