The St. Johns County school board expelled seven students after a violent incident at St. Augustine High School's bus loop on September 25. The altercation was described as a "brutal attack" and "full-out brawl". An additional student, a 15-year-old girl, was also expelled due to her involvement in the fight. Her identity is being withheld due to her age. The girl's family requested a public expulsion hearing, during which they contested the expulsion with legal representation. At the hearing, the 15-year-old girl claimed she was attacked by three students near the bus loop. The fight, which was captured on video, began with an argument and quickly escalated into physical violence. According to the district's account, another student initiated the fight, prompting the 15-year-old to retaliate. The situation required the intervention of two deputies and a dean to separate the students involved. The response to the fight involved 14 units from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, three assistant principals, and four deans. Superintendent Tim Forson, who was present at the hearing, commented on the unprecedented level of violence in the incident. Three staff members, including a dean, were injured while attempting to break up the fight. Security footage showed the dean trying to pull the 15-year-old away from the altercation, during which the dean was injured as the girl attempted to return to the fight. The 15-year-old girl stated that the students who initiated the fight had been harassing her and her sister for weeks, a situation that reportedly carried over from middle school. The dean confirmed receiving reports of harassment and admitted that more could have been done to address the issue. The student's father expressed his desire for schools to be safe environments for learning, free from violence. The expelled student will attend Gaines Alternative School in St. Augustine for the next school year, where she will have access to mental health resources.
