Even if you’re not using Studio One or Softube Console 1, you can create beats like these in any DAW and using any plugins or instruments of your choice.

All modern music has one thing in common - a great vocal performance. Whether it’s a singer on a rock or country song, a smooth vocal on the latest rap hit, or something more unique an nuanced, the vocal performance of a song is everything.

It’s what makes people relate to and remember a song, and can play a critical role in songs getting stuck in people’s heads. There are a thousand different ways to create great vocal production.

The most common techniques involve things like EQ, compression, layering, reverb, delay, and other effects. And while these are very effective tools, they’ve all been used countless times before.

So when you’re searching for something more original, unique, and modern, sometimes you have to break out of the box a bit to create something truly special.

In this simple, easy-to-follow video tutorial, we look at how a mixture of different elements can come together to create a unique and engaging vocal that’s perfect for leading a pop or R&B track.

We use several different vocal techniques to create a voice that’s all at once driving, thick and modern, but still leaves lots of room for other elements in the track.

If you’re not working with Studio One or Softube Console 1, that’s OK - these steps can be followed in any major DAW, including Pro Tools, Logic Pro X, Cubase, Nuendo, Reaper, Garage Band, Audacity, FL Studio, or Ableton.

You can use plugins from any manufacturer, including Waves, Slate Digital, McDSP, or anything else. You can use real outboard effects units as well. The important thing is getting creative with your production and creating unique layers that will make your track stand out from the rest.

Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or expert engineer or producer, this production lesson is guaranteed to get your vocals sounding more polished, unique and professional, every time.
