How does a laser printer actually work?
In this 3D animated educational video, we break down the complete laser printing process—an electrostatic printing method invented by Gary Starkweather at Xerox. Laser printers use dry toner powder instead of liquid ink and rely on subtractive color mixing (CMYK: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) to create all printable colors.

The printing cycle begins when the printer processes the digital data of text or images. A laser beam, reflected by a moving mirror, scans the electrostatically charged drum, neutralizing only the areas that form the image. Toner particles—charged oppositely—stick to these selected areas.

Next, the toner is transferred from the drum to the charged paper. In color printers, each color layer (C, M, Y, K) is applied separately. The paper then passes through heated rollers (the fuser unit), where heat and pressure melt the toner and permanently bond it to the paper.

Finally, the printed document exits onto the output tray.
