CONCAT
Functionality: CONCAT is a straightforward function that combines multiple text strings or ranges into one continuous string. It’s the modern replacement for the older CONCATENATE function.
Usage: Simply provide the strings or ranges you want to concatenate. For example, =CONCAT(A1, B1, C1) merges the contents of cells A1, B1, and C1 without any delimiter.
Limitations: CONCAT does not allow you to specify a delimiter, which can be a drawback if you need spaces, commas, or other characters between the merged items.
TEXTJOIN
Functionality: TEXTJOIN offers more flexibility by allowing you to specify a delimiter that will be inserted between the text strings.
Usage: The syntax is =TEXTJOIN(delimiter, ignore_empty, text1, [text2], ...). For example, =TEXTJOIN(", ", TRUE, A1, B1, C1) combines the contents of the cells with a comma and space between them, automatically ignoring any empty cells.
Advantages: TEXTJOIN is particularly useful when dealing with ranges or lists where you want to control spacing and punctuation. It simplifies the process of creating lists or formatted strings without manually adding delimiters.
Which Should You Use?
Choose CONCAT if you need a simple, direct way to combine a few strings without worrying about delimiters or empty cells.
Choose TEXTJOIN when you need more control over formatting, especially if you’re working with larger datasets or require specific delimiters.
In summary, while both functions are valuable for text manipulation in Excel, TEXTJOIN’s flexibility often makes it the preferred choice for more complex text combining tasks.
