Objectives:
1. To learn about the Review Quality Assurance process at CIHR
2. To help reviewers recognize high and low quality reviews
3. To practice how to apply a Review Quality check on your reviews

Dr. Sammy Nag has delivered health research funding competitions at CIHR for over 10 years. He has managed and run a variety of awards and grants competitions, and has a wealth of experience in developing and leading peer review processes. Since 2016, Dr. Nag has helped to define and implement various strategies that helped develop the College of Reviewers and has recently focused on establishing Reviewer Quality Assurance processes to support reviewers in delivering excellence in peer review.

Adrian Mota is the Associate Vice-President, Research Programs - Operations, at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). In this role, he is responsible for ensuring that CIHR supports and advances the highest international standards of excellence in health research. A strong proponent of continuous improvement, Adrian encourages his teams to take evidence-based approaches to the development, enhancement, and implementation of CIHR’s funding opportunities and peer review process. One of Adrian’s responsibilities is the work of the College of Reviewers, a virtual resource designed to professionalize peer review, enhance review quality and provide a more stable base of experienced reviewers across all CIHR’s funding programs. Adrian has had a leadership role in implementing quality assurance practices in peer review for all reviewers in order to promote advancements and integrity in CIHR’s processes. Adrian holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Ottawa. He is recognized for his exceptional leadership abilities, as well as for his passion and commitment to peer review enhancements to support the next generation of peer reviewers.

Dr. Norman Rosenblum is Professor of Paediatrics, Physiology, and Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto, a Paediatric Nephrologist and Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children, and Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD). Dr. Rosenblum is a graduate of the Dalhousie University MD Program, the Children’s Hospital, Boston Pediatric residency and Fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology, and a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Bjorn Olsen in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Harvard Medical School. The focus of Dr. Rosenblum’s research is to elucidate molecular mechanisms that control normal and malformed kidney development and has published over 140 peer-reviewed original manuscripts and book chapters. Dr. Rosenblum has been deeply engaged in developing and managing career development programs for clinician scientists. He founded and led the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program from 2001-2012 and served as Associate Dean, Physician Scientist Training in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, from 2008-2017. Dr. Rosenblum is the recipient of numerous prestigious international and national awards for his scientific and mentorship contributions. In 2018, the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine established the Norman Rosenblum Award for Excellence in Mentorship in the MD/PhD Program in recognition of Dr. Rosenblum's outstanding contributions to mentoring of MD/PhD students. He held a Tier Canada Research Chair and is an elected fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Dr. Rosenblum is recognized for his tremendous wealth of expertise in peer review with close to 30 years of peer review experience reviewing and chairing scientific panels at CIHR.
