Ornate Galaxias (Galaxias ornatus) were until recently part of the Mountain Galaxias (Galaxias olidus) species complex. Previously thought of as just one species, recent work on "Mountain Galaxias" by Dr Tarmo Raadik has shown that this group is actually a diverse "species complex"

These fish were filmed in a small freshwater stream in the upper Yarra River catchment in the Dandenong Ranges to the east of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. Best watched in HD in full screen mode.

Unfortunately many species of Galaxiids are now confined to the headwaters of waterways in areas where introduced predatory trout cannot reach them.
