Orochimaru is one of those naruto villains where most the community doesn’t even question whether or not this dude deserves to be in jail. Most fans would agree. In universe he’s listed as a rogue ninja who killed two kage, the third hokage and the fourth kazekage, he’s a former akatsuki member, and he’s committed unthinkable crimes against humanity from human trafficking to human experiments, and killed countless children when conducting research. So why did Kakashi and Naruto allow him to escape execution after the war or not spend the rest of his life in prison. Well, we learn in the naruto epilogue story, titled sasuke sunrise, that Kakashi was forward thinking enough to know that there would come a time where the ninja world would need someone as strong and well researched as Orochimaru and in the Boruto anime, Naruto flat out says to Tsunade and the elders he’s working with Orochimaru because he’s researching ways to try to combat the otsutsuki clan if there’s another threat, but as we saw with Jigen and Isshiki, Orochimaru’s research wasn’t far enough along to give Naruto an advantage in those fights.
