Liner Notes:
For my 80's dollars, it doesn't get much better than Icehouse's 1986 album "Measure for Measure". Iva Davies is an amazing songwriter with an equally amazing voice. "No Promises" just burned into my soul the first time I heard it. It transported me. Speaking of, whether it was sailing away on the seven seas searching for Spanish gold, visiting a winter palace or a girl on Angel Street, or crossing the border, Icehouse was taking you places. And man, did we enjoy the voyage. Brian Eno helps carry you there, with his patented silky synth textures. Brian Eno was actually in the band on this album. So yeah, Eno-rrific. Eno-rmous?
I actually recorded an instrumental version of this song a couple of years ago (hadn't gotten around to recording the vocals), which consisted of piano covering a lot of the synth stuff (and piano stuff), with guitar strumming along. I thought it would make a lovely studio recording, and I was going to recreate all of the backing vocals. But a few weeks ago I decided to try to revisit this song as a simple acoustic rendition. This is where I landed with it. I hope you like it. When it comes to arranging, I'm tellin' ya, it's all about the capo, folks. Once you figure out the nearest largely "open" position to play a song it, the rest is just math(s). In this case, Fm = Em with a capo on the first. No one wants to strum a barred Fm all song long. :)
One last thought about this song: I was fortunate enough to do a small tour of Australia last year (Icehouse is from Sydney). I can't wait to come back and sing some Icehouse for those good people next time. :) I'll have to learn "Great Southern Land", as well....
Thanks to Ovation Guitars for the beautiful "custom" Custom Legend. They were kind enough to build me this guitar with a midi pickup (like you may have seen on my old Martin road guitar) for my guitar synthesizer (Roland GR-55) and put my logo on the 12th fret. :) It's a shallow bowl version (built for traveling), and she sounds great.
Thanks to Jeff Cutler at Re-Axe Products for the shirt. Not a paid endorsement, just a cool guy with a cool company who gave me a cool shirt. :) https://axehandler.reaxe.us/
And a big thanks to you for listening/watching, and for helping spread the music.
