In today's class, we picked up the topic of bird banding as a tool to measure bird populations. We discussed how the Trust uses bird banding at our Rushton Woods Preserve and Farm to learn about species abundance and diversity and answer questions like longevity. Next, we discussed the cutting edge tracking technology called Motus that is helping to uncover more detailed information on the movements of birds across the landscape for conservation purposes. Next, we delved into what you can do to help birds at home including: planting natives to restore biodiversity and ecosystem function starting with insects, keeping cats indoors, preventing window strikes, switching to shade-grown coffee, and even bird watching!
