Top collegiate free agent Ben Meyers will head to the Colorado Avalanche after a painful decision to keep numerous NHL teams focused on his services, the team announced Wednesday. At least two dozen NHL teams expressed interest in signing the University of Minnesota Center, including his hometown of Minnesota Wild, but the Avalanche won and Meyers agreed to a two-year, entry-level contract.

Meyers, 23, a Hobby Baker Award finalist and Big Ten Player of the Year, was the junior captain of the Gophers that season and led the team to a Big Ten regular-season championship. He was a team best with 17 goals and 41 points in 34 games, hit 13 multi-point games and won 57.4 percent of scrimmages.

Minnesota advanced to the NCAA Tournament national semifinals before being eliminated by rival Minnesota State University on April 7.

In 102 career games for Minnesota, Meyers scored 39 goals and scored 95 points. He also represented the United States at the Beijing Olympics in February, finishing second on the team with 2 goals and 4 points in four games. Some see him as the tallest college free agent after Tyler Bozak and Torrey Kruger.

At 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, Meyers has a heavy hockey stature and is expected to be an immediate addition to the NHL lineup. He's ineligible for the playoffs because he's not listed on the trade line and will finish the first year of his contract during the regular season.
