“Quan họ” is a popular form of romantic antiphonal folk singing in Kinh Bắc, that is, the area north of Thăng Long - Hà Nội and now belonging to Bắc Ninh and Bắc Giang provinces. “Quan họ” is often lyrical and sentimental. Its melodies are ornamented with ligatures and trills as its particular feature, and are coupled with its distinctively sentimental,
passionate and craving-for-happy-love lyrics. “Quan họ” artisans/singers’ desire for a happy-ending romance hardly ever comes true, and thus their crave for love embedded in the singing often becomes even more fervent. The call and response style of “Quan họ” singing can take place on a boat, during village festivals, or at different times in a day between a pair of male singers and a pair of female singers or between a group of male singers and a group of female singers during village festivals. “Quan họ” artisans/singers only meet once or twice a year at major occasions such as their annual village festival.
There are three steps in Quan ho singing, or three voices. Lề Lối is the opening step in which the artisan sings old folk lyrics requiring a high singing technique. Giọng Vặt, next, is the most amusing phase whereby artisans from the two sides exchange and reply to each other’s melodies and lyrics. Giã Bạn is the last step, the moment to sing good bye songs. At the end of the 20th century, “Quan họ” started to be brought onto professional performing stages. Since then, solo singing combined with instruments has been added to “Quan họ” as an extra feature. Sophisticatedly bringing traditional materials and these newly created contemporary elements together is the premise that gave birth to the album titled “Nam Nhi” by Ngô Hồng Quang.​
