Terraform Authorization & Authentication Explained

In this video, we dive into the mystical world of Terraform security—yes, we’re talking about Authentication and Authorization. Ever wondered how Terraform figures out who you are, and then decides what you can do with it?

Spoiler alert: it’s like a VIP bouncer at a club, but much nerdier.

🔒 Authentication: This is Terraform’s way of checking your ID. It's like when the bouncer asks for your ID at the door of the club. Are you actually who you say you are? Is your token legit? Terraform uses credentials like AWS Secrets, Azure service principals, or Google Cloud service accounts to make sure you're not some random person trying to wreak havoc on the cloud.

🛡️ Authorization: Once you’ve passed the bouncer (a.k.a. authenticated), it's time to check if you're allowed to do anything inside. This is where Terraform asks, “So... do you get to create all those AWS EC2 instances, or are you only allowed to peek at them?” Authorization makes sure you're only allowed to do the stuff your role lets you do—no wandering into areas you shouldn’t be!
