Hoarding is like running shoes in that people buy running shoes based on their beliefs about what the shoes will do for them. Similarly, people hoard items in their homes based on their own stories about these items, and the meaning they hold for different moments in their lives.

However, like an old pair of running shoes that loses its tread and shock absorption, the items that people hoard may grow old and lose their usefulness, or the owner may lose interest in them. Despite this, it can be difficult to let go of these items due to the emotional attachment and memories associated with them.

Deciding when to get rid of items or stop hoarding is a personal journey and varies for each individual. The first step towards addressing hoarding tendencies is acknowledging that there may be an issue.
