Описание к видео Craftivism artist talk: Adriana Alarcón

Adriana Alarcón, a maker, community organizer, and activist, Alarcón identifies as a craftivist. Alarcón describes craftivism as an urgent, passionate, and earnest practice—born from an ethos of having “the patience to stab something a thousand times with a small pointy object in order to make my point visible.” She emphasizes that the mindful, laborious, hand-made quality of her creations is only part of the practice. For her, collective empowerment is essential to craftivism. Throughout her talk, Alarcón will share stories from her own practice, as well as those of other contemporary craftivists and their communities, providing a lived definition of the term, and offering examples of exhibitions which have highlighted this practice. This talk was originally filmed on October 17th, 2024 at the C2 Centre for Craft in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

This exhibition was made possible through the generous support of the Manitoba Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, and Winnipeg Arts Council.

Adriana Alarcón is an artist living on Treaty 1 territory. A first-generation immigrant from Guatemala of complex identities, Alarcón is Latine, cisgender, queer, sober and living with disability. As a mestiza woman, she recognizes Spanish and Maya K’ekchi’ ancestry (though no direct claim to Indigenous community). These identities guide her work to explore contradictions and connections. Alarcón incorporates cultural craft traditions and ancestral knowledge with contemporary narratives using fibre-based crafts, such as knitting, crochet, embroidery, beading and weaving. She has a bachelor’s degree from York University in Cultural Studies. Alarcón combines her art practice with arts administration in Toronto and Winnipeg working at artist-run centres such as A Space, CARFAC Ontario, Craft Action TO, Steps and MAWA. Her recent work Care Capsules was shown at aceartinc in 2022.
