Polycystic ovarian condition is a very common condition where there is difficulty in conceiving. After the regular treatment, like ovulation indication with oral medications or injections, or even with lifestyle modification, if the couple is not able to conceive, the many at times we advise the couples to undergo ovarian drilling. Does it mean that ovarian drilling leads to success or spontaneous pregnancy and all? No. Ovarian drilling definitely increases the chance of normal egg development and spontaneous ovulation and pregnancy. But it is not that every patient conceives following ovarian drilling. Ovarian drilling also has some side effects, like following ovarian drilling there can be adhesion formation or if it is overzealously drilled, then it can lead to premature ovarian failure. Around 50 to 60% of the women after ovarian drilling, start having spontaneous egg development and ovulation. Another 20 to 25% of them may require certain medications that help them to have egg development and ovulation but another 15 to 20% of the women may not be responds enough for this ovarian drilling also. So please discuss this situation with your consultant and take an adequate decision about ovarian drilling.
