A dividend is simply a company sharing part of its profits with its shareholders. If at the time a company declares dividends you hold its shares, you are a shareholder and get to share in the profits (by way of dividends).
Dividends are typically paid quarterly or every three months, although there are companies that pay dividends monthly (most REITs) or semi-annually or even annually.
Capital Appreciation is the growth in price or value of shares overtime.

Dividend Growth Investing is important to any investor because of the ability to create cash flow, without selling your position in a stock. Reinvested dividends can result in significant growth of a portfolio from the strong compounding effect resulting in increasing wealth for an investor.
