The History and Legacy of 17th Century Dutch Still Life Painting

Jane Jones’ contemporary floral paintings have their foundation in the symbols, compositions, and history of 17th Century Dutch Still Life paintings. Join Dr. Henry Luttikhuizen and Dr. Marsely Kehoe as they discuss the artists, historical legacy, and the continuing impact of this art tradition.

This program supports the Holland Museum’s current special exhibition, Cultivating the Dutch Tradition in the 21st Century: Jane Jones’ Hyperrealist Floral Paintings, on view from May 5-July 3, 2023.

Author, curator, and art historian Dr. Henry Luttikhuizen has taught at Kendall College of Art and Design, Calvin College, and is currently a Scholar in Residence at Grand Valley State University. He received his BA in Art History and Political Science from Calvin College, a Masters in Philosophical Aesthetics from The Institute for Christian Studies, and an MA and PhD in in Art History from the University of Virginia. He has published numerous books and articles and is currently working on projects focused on Late Medieval and Early Netherlandish art.

Dr. Marsely Kehoe is an independent scholar who specializes in 17th century Dutch art history, particularly in the Dutch colonial world, in Southeast Asian (formerly the Dutch East Indies), and the Caribbean. Dr. Kehoe holds a BA in art history and modern foreign languages from Kenyon College, and an MA and PhD in Art History from the University of Wisconsin.
