Changing fuel filter is very important for your car. For a BMW 5series 520d it is not very difficult to change it. The hardest part si to remove and mount back the beneath cover. It has 15 screws and the space is very tight.
Fuel filter is located on the LEFT side of the car, beneath it, approximately under driver's seat.

I lifted the car to gain some space; it helps a-lot
