I ran a small “experiment” using BigScience’s BLOOM Large Language model in which I compared the text generation capabilities of the model on English and Shona given very similar prompts. The English text generated from the prompts is well structured and is a somewhat logical continuation of the promoted text. The continuation for Shona is horribly nonsensical. It is neither valid Shona text, nor does it logically tie in with the given prompt. The reason for this appears to be the size of the available data used to train the model. Only 0.0001% of the training data was in Shona, and it’s very unlikely that it would have seen content with the context similar to the prompt.
