Before the story.
A country in the world of eastern fairy tales. An antelope captured by the emperor transforms into a beautiful woman.
The emperor marries this beautiful woman, who is actually the daughter of Kaikobat, the great king of the spirit world.
However, due to Kaikobat's curse, if the Empress does not have a shadow within 12 months of their marriage, the Emperor will become the body of a doctor.
Act.1
Palace.
A branch of the spirit world asks if the Empress's wet nurse has a shadow.
The emperor appears and tells the nurse that he is going hunting for three days. He goes out to look for his beloved hawk.
When the Empress appears, the hawk that was supposed to be gone appears.
The Empress, who can understand the language of birds, is told by the hawk, ``If the Emperor does not obtain a shadow, his body will turn to stone.''
The nurse teaches the mother, ``If you go down to the human world, you will find a shadow.''
The two go down to the lower world and plan to obtain a shadow from the wife of Barak, the dyer.
Barak and his wife have no children.
The nanny talks to the dyer's wife, and his wife begins to think about selling her shadow.
During the three days the emperor was away, the empress and the wet nurse began working as servants for the wife.
The husband returns home, but is heartbroken by his wife's cold treatment.

Act.2
The couple's hearts are not in sync. The emperor is guided by a hawk to find the queen and the nurse, and realizes that they have descended to the underworld. He suppresses his anger and leaves. The nurse tries to tear the couple apart and get the shadow from his wife, but Barak does not abandon her.
The queen is troubled, thinking that it is her fault.
When the three days are about to end, his wife lies ("I have been unfaithful and sold my shadow").
But the shadow is gone.
Barak tries to attack his wife, so the queen cannot take her shadow.
His wife confesses that she lied and regains her composure.
Suddenly, the earth splits open, and the couple falls into separate depths.

Act.3
Underground spiritual world.
Although Barak and his wife are separated and unaware of each other, they begin to express their sincere love for each other.
The Empress and her nurse arrive in front of Kaikobat's palace, and only the Empress goes inside to complain to her father, the King.
The nurse is relegated to the human world.
Inside the palace, there is an emperor who has been turned into stone with only his eyes remaining.
The Empress tries to get a shadow, but she stops trying to get a shadow because she thinks of Barak and his wife.
But in the end, her heart moves Kaikobat's heart, the Emperor turns back into a human, and the Empress gains a shadow.
The Baracks meet again, and the wife and husband, whose shadows have returned, embrace each other.
