A fierce bombing strategy codenamed 'Operation Gomorrah' was used by the Allies during World War Two and commenced on July 24, 1943. On the evening of July 27, a fleet of 730 British bombers appeared over Hamburg unleashing over 2,300 tons of bombs. Deadly and uncontrollable fires broke out all over the city.
