In the semi final of the number one contender tournament for the intercontinental title in December 2008, John Morrison faced CM Punk. Who hit a GTS and pinned him to advance. Kofi Kingston then faced Rey Mysterio. Rey rolled him up and advanced. Meanwhile at a house show, Punk and Kofi lost their tag teams titles against Miz and Morrison. At Armageddon, Mysterio faced Punk in the final. Punk hit a GTS on Rey and pinned him for a chance at the title. Next day, Punk and Kofi tried to regain their tag titles but they lost in the end. A week later, Punk faced Jericho for a chance at the world title. But got caught with the codebreaker and then got pinned. Next week, Punk faced Cody Rhodes, Regal distracted him and he got counted out. Then attacked Cody until Regal knocked him out. A week later they finally met. CM Punk went for the GTS but Regal grabbed the referee and got disqualified. Stephanie McMahon appeared and set a rematch, if Regal gets disqualified, he will lose the title. A week later they met again. In the end, CM Punk hit Regal that seemed to be a low blow and got disqualified. A week later they met again in a no DQ match. In the end, CM Punk hit Regal with a GTS and pinned him to become the new Intercontinental Champion.
