The Historic Marysville City Cemetery, established in 1850 during California’s Gold Rush era, is owned by the City of Marysville. It sits on 14 acres and is reputed to be the oldest city-owned cemetery west of the Mississippi River and the burial place of some 10,000 people. The Cemetery is located north of the city, outside its protective levees in a flood plan, and is a California Point of Historical Interest. It is divided into sections, including the Japanese, Chinese, Masonic, Odd Fellows, Colored (African American), Babies’ and Grand Army of the Republic, and a Potter’s Field for indigent deceased. A Jewish Cemetery is within the City Cemetery boundaries but has its own Find-A-Grave record (https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2....
Some notable burials include Charles Covillaud, married to Mary Murphy Covillaud of the ill-fated Donner Party, for whom the City of Marysville is named; Mary’s sister, Donner Party survivor Harriet Frances Murphy Nye; Charles Macy, whose brother Rowland Hussey Macy founded the Macy’s department store chain in 1858; and Charles E. DeLong, United States Envoy to Japan.
The Cemetery is inactive; the only burials allowed are those in existing family plots.
Burial records from 1850 to 1870 have long been missing, frustrating historians and volunteers as they struggle to understand who is buried in the Cemetery.
The Cemetery is largely maintained by the City Cemetery Commission and volunteers.
