"Jakarta Gardening is a community that started out in the social media when someone had the initiative to turn idle lands in Jakarta into something useful. A lot of people supported this idea and we gathered for a brainstorming session. About two and a half months later, we decided to start this urban farming activity."

"This is a fantastic idea because it is carried out by young people who are previously unfamiliar with gardening. These people are now highly interested with gardening. Even though we have very limited land in the city, this activity can be looked at as promising, in an economic sense, to increase the productivity of the land."

Urban gardening has become a big trend in Jakarta - thanks to networking via social media.
Vegetable plots are sprouting up in vacant lots, providing food and relaxation for stressed-out city dwellers.
STORYLINE:
It's green fingers galore at this city farm in Jakarta.
These leisure gardeners are part of the Indonesia Gardening community, brought together by social media network Twitter.
Miniature farms have sprung up in the middle of the capital, Jakarta, a crowded metropolis of 10 million residents.
Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, after just one year there's now a rich harvest of spinach, corn and watercress - right in the heart of the city.
Beriozka Anita, a spokesman for the community, says the aim was to turn disused land around the capital into fertile vegetable plots:
"Jakarta Gardening is a community that started out in the social media when someone had the initiative to turn idle lands in Jakarta into something useful. A lot of people supported this idea and we gathered for a brainstorming session. About two and a half months later, we decided to start this urban farming activity."
The movement became an instant hit in the capital, and now claims more than 2,200 followers on Twitter.
