Soft meals are often the only option for seniors with swallowing difficulties, but they’re usually bland and nothing like the dishes they once loved. What if they could enjoy real dim sum that is both visually appealing and flavorful?"

Today, we welcomed over 100 participants, including elderly guests with swallowing difficulties and their caregivers, volunteers and officiating guests, to the “Inclusive Soft Meal Dim Sum Experience” on campus, held in partnership with Project Futurus and Haven of Hope Christian Service. Instead of typical puréed meals, seniors were served soft-textured dim sum that was both nutritious and visually authentic, restoring the joy and visual appeal often missing from conventional soft meals.

We were honored to have Executive Council (ExCo) Member and Chief Executive Officer of Haven of Hope Christian Service Dr. LAM Ching-Choi, ExCo Member and Legislative Council Member Mr. Tommy CHEUNG Yu-Yan, Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare Mr. HO Kai-Ming, and District Officer (Wong Tai Sin) Mr. Thomas WU Kui-Wah joining HKUST President Nancy Ip and our senior management to this meaningful event. Together with student performers and staff volunteers, they helped serve nostalgic dim sum reimagined in soft-textured form, bringing warmth and joy back to mealtime.

The event also showcased how HKUST’s innovations are advancing elderly care. Startup Elevatefoods showcased how 3D food printing can make soft meals more appealing and scalable, while PanopticAI demonstrated how facial scan technology offers personalized health and nutrition insights.

Prof. Nancy Ip expressed her delight that the participating seniors had a happy gathering with their caregivers and the enthusiastic student and staff volunteers. “For people with swallowing difficulties, a visually authentic yet delicious soft meal not only revives fond memories but also represents the fusion of happiness and compassionate care. Today, I am happy to see our students and alumni leveraging technology to streamline the production process of soft meals with enhanced nutrition – a notable example to enhance societal well-being through discoveries in healthcare technologies. With Hong Kong having one of the world’s fastest aging populations, it is crucial that our extended lifespans are filled with vitality .
